UNEARTH Bassist: PRESIDENT BUSH Is A Terrible Leader
July 18, 2004UNEARTH bassist John Maggard recently spoke to Metal-Exiles.com about the inspiration for the group's latest CD, "The Oncoming Storm". What follows are several excerpts from that interview:
Metal-Exiles.com: Lets get into the lyrics, they are pretty grim. What inspired them?
John Maggard: "[The song] 'The Great Dividers' was inspired by our touring experiences, touring around the country and talking political talk. We are not being preachy. Just people coming up to us asking what our views are on certain things. Even in the band we have different views but we agree on certain things as well. 'The Great Dividers' is kind of like a play on the division of our country. The album is very grim lyrically than what we are used to but now we are a little angrier but with a positive pretense. It is more of trying to get people to be more aware, you know?!"
Metal-Exiles.com: Yes.
John Maggard: "I think at the same time with the way things are people are more aware and for that ball to keep rolling I think that anyone that listens to us they have to take a grim approach. We are a lot worse off than we were during the Clinton administration."
Metal-Exiles.com: A lot of people I know think that if Gore were in office he would have done nothing.
John Maggard: "That worries me, on one end I am glad that Bush tightened security but on the other I think he ran with that ball incredibly to long."
Metal-Exiles.com: You think? Three years later? (laughter)
John Maggard: "It is ridiculous. There were so many other alternatives. I am not talking war wise, just sinking money into the right things for the right reasons would have been a preemptive strike on its on without going to war and having the ill repute of the people overseas."
'[Bush] is a terrible leader in my opinion and I hate to say this out loud but I am a republican. I am also a conservative thinker but that does not make me a warmonger. I would have agreed with security measures, beefing up the military because that is one thing I disagreed with Clinton about was that he depleted the military. I came from a military family and my dad was forced to retire and I lived a rough existence at a young age due to that. I am pro military, not to make war but to have a safety net. There is a reason that we do not get invaded."
